Best Skincare Routine for Children With Sensitive Skin
As a mother or father, it can feel overwhelming trying to figure out what a “good” skincare routine actually looks like when your child has sensitive skin. What works for one child doesn’t always work for another, and it often becomes a process of trial and error more than anything else.
There is also a stigma around skincare routines for children. People often ask, what age should we start, is it even needed, what should we use, how often should we use it, and should mornings and evenings be different. There are so many questions we as parents naturally have.
Over time, I realised that the simpler I kept things, the better my children’s skin responded. We do not need a hundred products. Sometimes one good, gentle product is enough.
In this blog I’m going to share the routine I personally use and what I’ve learned along the way.
Why routine matters for sensitive skin
Sensitive skin tends to react more easily when it is overwhelmed with too many products or frequent changes.
I found that consistency mattered more than complexity. Once I stopped switching products constantly, things became much more predictable.
Once I also stopped using products with long ingredient lists that I could not read or understand, I noticed a real improvement in my children’s skin.
Morning routine
In the morning, I keep things very simple:
-
Wash face with water only and gently pat dry
-
Apply a fragrance free moisturiser or butter
-
That is it, just two steps: clean and moisturise
I try not to overcomplicate mornings because I have found skin does not need too much at the start of the day.
Bath time routine
Bath time used to be where most of the confusion started for me.
Now I keep it simple:
-
Use a gentle, fragrance free wash for body
-
For the face, I often stick to water only with a soft cloth
-
Keep bath time products minimal and consistent
I avoid anything heavily fragranced or foamy as I have found that tends to cause irritation in my children.
After bath routine
This is, in my opinion, the most important part of the routine.
After bath time:
-
Pat skin dry, do not rub
-
Apply moisturiser or body butter while skin is still slightly damp
-
Focus on dry areas first, then apply more generally if needed
-
Reapply during the day if skin feels dry or tight
This is where I focus most on moisture and consistency. Keeping the skin hydrated after bathing has made the biggest difference for us.
